W&M Cruises Past Georgia State, 3-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary volleyball team earned another impressive victory with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-21, 30-13) win against Georgia State on Friday evening in Williamsburg. With the triumph, the Tribe (10-9, 5-1) remains tied for first place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with Delaware. Additionally, the College has won six of its last seven matches.

As a team, W&M recorded a .398 attack percentage (50-9-103), while limiting GSU to just .126 hitting (36-23-103). Individually, sophomore Lauren Powell and freshman Ginny Bray each tallied a team-high eight kills and posted attack percentages better than .350. Sophomore Bryana Carey also came up big with seven put-aways on .538 hitting (7-0-13), while junior Abbi Owens finished with seven kills on a .455 attack percentage (7-2-11). Junior Kim Mount registered a double-double with a match-high 43 assists to go along with 11 digs, and classmate Jill Nowadly tallied a match-high 13 digs to lead the College defensively.

While the Tribe fell behind 8-4 during the initial stage of the opening game, it rallied back with a 14-2 run to claim an eight-point advantage. The Green and Gold never led by less than seven points the rest of the way and cruised to the 14-point victory. W&M hit .400 (17-3-35) as a team and was led by junior Jillian Brown and Powell, who recorded four kills apiece. Mount also played well, totaling 14 assists and six digs.

The Tribe’s momentum and excellent play carried over into the second game, as the squad jumped out to an early 10-3 lead following a GSU ball-handling error. Although the Panthers called a timeout and gradually cut the margin to four, 13-9, W&M countered with an 8-4 run, punctuated with an ace by Carey, to take a comfortable 22-13 advantage. The Tribe remained in control the rest of the way and earned the 30-21 win. The College posted an impressive .406 hitting percentage (15-2-32) in the second set and was led by Owens’ four put-aways and Mount’s 13 assists. Junior Molly Bohman also contributed three total blocks.

As was the case in the second game, the Tribe took a commanding lead early in the third frame and never looked back. With Skipper serving to start the set, the Green and Gold rattled off the first six points and then cruised to the 17-point game-three victory. The College hit .389 (18-4-36) as a team and got good performances from Powell and Carey, who each totaled four kills, while Mount dished out 16 assists.

The Tribe will return to action again when it hosts UNC Wilmington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
