Tribe Perfect on Opening Day of Hampton Roads Invite
W&M won all six of its singles matches and it lone doubles match on Oct. 12.

Norfolk, Va. - The William and Mary women’s tennis team completed a perfect opening day at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 12. The Tribe won all six of its singles matches and its lone doubles match of the day at the event hosted by Old Dominion.
Sophomore Ragini Acharya won both her matches in the Flight A singles draw to improve to 7-4 on the season. The Pulaski, Va., native defeated Elena Triebskorn of Longwood, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round, before making quick work of Hofstra’s Christie Gattelaro, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. The 90th ranked player in the country will battle ODU’s Charleen Haarhoff in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The top singles flight is being played at the ODU indoor courts.
In the Flight B-1 singles draw, sophomore Lauren Sabacinski earned a berth in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Elena Berry of Delaware. The win bumped Sabacinski’s season mark to 4-1. The Plantation, Fla., native will meet Jennifer Hirsh of George Washington at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the ODU outdoor courts.
Sophomore Magdalena Bresson improved to 6-1 on the season with an easy, 6-0, 6-1 win over Lindsay Gray of George Mason in the Flight B-2 singles bracket. The win propelled Bresson into the quarterfinals where she will meet Mary Washington’s Natalia Fugate at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the ODU outdoor courts.
The Tribe rounded out its perfect opening day in singles with victories from sophomore Carmen Pop and junior Barbara Zidek in the C-1 and C-2 singles brackets, respectively. In her first match of the fall season, Pop tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win over Verena Knoedler of George Washington. She will face UNCW’s Melissa Wolf in the quarterfinals at the Maury courts. The match is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Zidek notched her fifth victory of the season, disposing of Ashley Melson of Longwood, 6-2, 6-2. The Orland Park, Ill., native will play Chelsea Kahle of UNCW at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The Flight C-2 singles bracket will be competed at the Maury courts.
In the College’s lone doubles competition of the day, Acharya and Bresson recorded their first victory as a team this season. The W&M duo dispatched of Cornelia Carapcea and Pascaline Cette of UMBC, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals at the ODU indoor courts, the Tribe tandem will face Lauren Clifton and Christie Gattelaro of Hofstra at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
In the Flight B-2 doubles draw, the W&M team of Sabacinski and Zidek received a first-round bye and will play the Mary Washington team of Courtney Golmarac and Kate in quarterfinals at 3 p.m. The Flight B-2 quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Saturday at the ODU outdoor courts.
The Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational continues on Saturday, Oct. 13, before wrapping up with the championship rounds on Sunday, Oct. 14.
