Tribe Advances Three Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams to Finals at Hampton Roads Invite
Sophomores Ragini Acharya, Lauren Sabacinski and Magdalena Bresson earned berths in their respective singles finals on Sunday.

Norfolk, Va. - The William and Mary women’s tennis team advanced a trio of singles players and a pair of doubles teams to the finals of their respective brackets at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Ragini Acharya, Lauren Sabacinski and Magdalena Bresson will compete in the finals of the Flight A, B-1 and B-2 singles draws, respectively, on Sunday, Oct. 14. In doubles, Acharya and Bresson moved into the finals of the Flight A bracket, while the Tribe tandem of Sabacinski and junior Barbara Zidek advanced to the finals of the Flight B-2 draw.
Acharya claimed a pair of straight-set victories to move into the championship of the Flight A draw. The Pulaski, Va., native downed Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals, before disposing of Temple’s Christine Clemont, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals. Acharya improved to 9-4 on the season and will meet Dina Senkina of Temple at 9 a.m. in the championship at the ODU indoor courts on Sunday.
In the Flight B-1 singles draw, Sabacinski improved to 6-1 with a pair of victories. In the quarterfinals, the Tribe sophomore dispatched of Jennifer Hirsh of George Washington, 6-0, 6-1. She downed Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova of Temple, 6-4, 6-0, to earn a spot in the finals of the bracket. Sabacinski will battle George Washington’s Nadia Demidenko at 9 a.m. at the ODU outdoor courts.
Bresson continued her impressive early-season play with a pair of convincing victories in the Flight B-2 singles draw. The Delray Beach, Fla., native downed Natalia Fugate of Mary Washington, 6-0, 6-1, and Radford’s Ivana Tomaic, 6-0, 6-2, to claim a spot in the finals. Bresson, who improved to 8-1 on the year, will meet Elizabeth Adams of Pittsburgh at the ODU outdoor courts at 9 a.m.
Acharya and Bresson claimed their second victory of the tournament in the Flight A doubles bracket. The W&M tandem downed the Hofstra duo of Lauren Clifton and Christie Gattelaro, 8-5, in the semifinals. The Tribe pair will face the Old Dominion team of Barbara Costa and Charleen Haarhoff in the finals at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the ODU indoor courts.
Sabacinski and Zidek made it two W&M doubles teams in the finals with a pair of victories in the Flight B-2 doubles bracket. The Tribe duo disposed of Courtney Goimarac and Kate Malpeli of Mary Washington, 8-1, in the quarterfinals, before knocking off UNCW’s Lauren Isenhour and Kayla Schwenk, 8-5, in the semifinals. Sabacinski and Zidek will square off with Anastasiia Rkavyshnykova and Dina Senkina of Temple at 11 a.m. in the finals at the ODU outdoor courts.
