W&M Earns a 1-0 Triumph at VCU

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Emily Kittleson found the back of the net in the 35th minute to lift the William and Mary women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Virginia Commonwealth University on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play, while the Rams fall to 7-6-1 overall and 4-2 in league action.

Kittleson registered the game-winning score off an assist from sophomore Sarah Quinlan 34:14 into the contest. Quinlan sent a pass to Kittleson from the left side, and the Virginia Beach, Va., native eluded a defender and scored from the edge of the box. The goal was Kittleson’s third this season.

“We played really well defensively today,” Head Coach John Daly said. “We had a number of good scoring opportunities and were somewhat unfortunate not to have had more goals, but it was a very good team effort.”

Junior Meghan Walker earned her seventh shutout of the season and had six saves. With the performance, she lowered her goals against average to 0.49.

Offensively, Quinlan, junior Claire Zimmeck, sophomore Krissy Vornadore and freshman Danielle Axenfeld all totaled two shots apiece.

The Rams held a narrow 16-13 advantage in shots and a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. However, the College had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Tribe will return to action again next weekend when it hosts Towson and George Mason.
