Acharya, Bresson Claim Titles at Hampton Roads Invite

Norfolk, Va. - Sophomores Ragini Acharya and Magdalena Bresson claimed a trio of titles for the William and Mary women’s tennis team on the final day of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. Acharya claimed the Flight A singles crown, while Bresson won the Flight B-2 singles draw. The duo combined to win the top doubles flight at the Invite as well.

Acharya completed her perfect 5-0 run through the tournament field with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Temple’s Dina Senkina at the ODU indoor courts. The victory bumped Acharya’s singles mark to 10-4 on the season.

Bresson cruised to the B-2 singles title with an unblemished 6-0, 6-0 victory over Elizabeth Adams of Pittsburgh. The victory pushed Bresson’s singles mark to 9-1 on the year.

Sophomore Lauren Sabacinski narrowly missed making it three singles titles for the Tribe, falling in one of the most entertaining matches of the day. Sabacinski claimed the opening set, 6-4, over George Washington’s Nadia Demidenko in the B-1 final, before the Colonial player rallied to force a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Demindenko outlasted Sabacinski, 13-11.

Acharya and Bresson improved to a perfect 3-0 on the year with an easy win to claim the Flight A doubles draw. The Tribe tandem disposed of Old Dominion’s top duo of Barbara Costa and Charleen Haarhoff, 8-3, to claim the title.

The Tribe will return to action at the ITA East Regional Championship, Oct. 19-23. Old Dominion will host the regional at the new Folkes/Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
