Tribe Opens Competition at ITA Mideast Regional

Charlottesville, Va. - The William and Mary men’s tennis team opened the ITA Mideast Regional with a perfect day in the main singles and doubles draws on Oct. 18. Junior Dominic Pagon and sophomore Keziel Juneau opened with singles victories, while the Tribe tandem of senior Alex Cojanu and Juneau started with an easy victory in doubles. The University of Virginia is hosting the event at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

Juneau needed three sets to dispatch of James Madison’s Jesse Tarr in the opening round of the main singles flight. After claiming the first set, 6-2, the Tribe sophomore dropped the second set to Tarr, 6-2. He rebounded to claim the third set and the match, 6-3. The win was the second of the season for Juneau. He will meet Vinicius Bortolatto of Winthrop in the second round at 9 a.m. on Friday. The winner will have his third round match at 1:30 p.m.

Pagon continued his early season winning streak with a straight-set win over Walker Lyons of Davidson. After needing a tiebreaker to take the first set, 7-6 (1), Pagon rolled past his Wildcat opponent, 6-0, in the second to claim the match. The Kingston, Jamaica native extended his career long winning streak to eight matches, improving to 8-1 on the year. He will meet the No. 9 seed Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State at noon on Friday. Aubone is also ranked No. 70 in the country. The winner will have his third round match at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Cojanu, who is seeded No. 9 at the event, received an opening round bye. He will face Sebastian Ripoll of VCU at 9 a.m. in the second round on Friday. The second-round winner will play his third round contest at 4 p.m.

Cojanu and Juneau improved to 3-2 on the season with an easy 8-3 win over Riley King and Matt King of Old Dominion. The Tribe tandem is seeded No. 2 in the tournament and ranked No. 11 nationally. Cojanu and Juneau will meet Brandon Corace and Albert Laregola of Virginia Tech in the second round on Friday.

The ITA Mideast Regional will continue on Friday, Oct. 19. The event will run through Monday, Oct. 22.
