Tribe Doubles Team Advances to Round of 16

Charlottesville, Va. - The Tribe men’s tennis duo of senior Alex Cojanu and sophomore Keziel Juneau moved into the round of 16 at the ITA Mideast Regional on Friday afternoon. The W&M tandem will attempt to claim the region doubles championship for W&M for the second straight. Last season, Cojanu and then-senior Colin O’Brien won the doubles crown.

Cojanu and Juneau, who are seeded No. 2 in the tournament, advanced to the round of 16 by a walkover when the Virginia Tech team of Brandon Corace and Albert Laregola could not compete due to injury. The No. 11-ranked pair nationally will face the winner of Maryland’s Boris Fetbroyt and Andrew Orban and Davidson’s Eric Noble and Phillip Compeau at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The quarterfinals are slated for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday as well.

In singles, both Juneau and junior Dominic Pagon fell in the second round of the main draw. Juneau fell to straight sets to Vinicius Bortolatto of Winthrop, 6-4, 6-2. Pagon on the other hand gave No. 70 Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State all he could handle. The Tribe junior grabbed the opening set, 6-4, before the No. 9 seed in the tournament forced a second-set tiebreaker and took the set, 7-6 (4). Aubone outlasted Pagon in the third, 6-2, to snap the Tribe player’s eight-match winning streak.

After receiving a first round bye, Cojanu rolled past Alin Zorilla-Ditoi of Hampton, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round. Cojanu, who was seed No. 9 in the tournament, could not keep the momentum going as he fell to No. 17 seeded and No. 125 ranked Jay Weinacker of N.C. State, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Cojanu entered the match ranked No. 85 nationally.

The ITA Mideast Regional will continue on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The event, which is being hosted by the University of Virginia, will run through Monday, Oct. 22.
