Tribe Continues to Roll at East Regional

Norfolk, Va. - The William and Mary women’s tennis program continued its dominating performance at the ITA East Regional Championship. The College advanced five players to the round of 16 in singles and two doubles teams to the round of 16 in doubles on the third day of the championship.

Senior Megan Moulton-Levy, playing in her first singles tournament of the year, easily rolled through her two opponents on Sunday. The No. 1-seeded player in the tournament and No. 7-ranked nationally downed Jordan Jenkins of Liberty, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round before disposing of Kristy Borza of Pittsburgh, 6-1, 6-1, in the third round.

Sophomore Ragini Acharya, who is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, improved to 12-4 on the season with a pair of wins in the second and third rounds of the East Regional. Acharya downed Dina Senkina of Temple, 7-5, 6-1, before dispatching of No. 32 seed Agnes Sibilski from Harvard, 6-3, 6-1.

Juniors Katarina Zoricic and Klaudyna Kasztelaniec won a pair of contests to advance to the round of 16. Zoricic improved to 6-4 overall with wins over Jenny Shular of Penn State (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) in the second round and versus No. 22 seed Stephanie Schnitter of Harvard (7-5, 6-3) in the third round. Kasztelaneic defeated Dartmouth’s Meg Zebroski, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round and No. 25 seed Michal Amir of Maryland, 7-6, 1-6, 6-0, in the third round. The victories upped her season mark to 8-3 on the campaign.

Sophomore Magdalena Bresson made it five players in the round of 16 as she continued her winning ways. The Delray Beach, Fla., native downed No. 31 seed Elizabeth George of Cornell, 6-1, 6-1, before disposing of Fordham’s Catherine Kellner, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, to earn a spot in the round of 16. With the victories, Bresson improved to 12-1 on the year.

The round of 16 in singles is slated to start at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 22. Moulton-Levy will meet No. 24 seed Vianca Aboubakare of Brown, while No. 46-ranked Zoricic will face No. 15 seed Julia Koulbitskaya of Penn. Acharya, who is ranked No. 90 nationally, will face No. 14 seeded and No. 124 ranked nationally Yulia Rivelis of Penn, while Kasztelaniec will meet No. 3 seed and No. 48 ranked Kellie Schmitt of Marshall. The tallest task of the morning will fall to Bresson, who is slated to face No. 2 seeded and No. 26-ranked Tatsiana Uvarova of VCU. The quarterfinals in singles are all slated for 11 a.m. on Monday.

W&M advanced a pair of doubles teams to the round of 16 as both Moulton-Levy and Zoricic along with Acharya and Bresson advanced on the third day of the regional tournament. Moulton-Levy and Zoricic, who are ranked No. 1 nationally, disposed of the No. 14-seeded VCU team of Laura Burns and Vera Petrashevich, 8-1. The win upped the Tribe duos mark to 4-0 on the year.

Acharya and Bresson also remained perfect on the year with their sixth win of the season. The sophomore tandem, who is seeded No. 15 in the tournament, upset the No. 7 seeded pair of Barbara Costa and Charleen Haarhoff from Old Dominion, 8-5.

The doubles quarterfinals are slated for a 1 p.m. start time on Monday. Moulton-Levy and Zoricic will face the No. 8 seeded team of Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz from Yale, while Acharya and Bresson will face the No. 3 seeded pair of Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor from Marshall. The Marshall tandem is ranked No. 59 nationally.

The ITA East Regional will continue on Monday, Oct. 22, before wrapping up on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Old Dominion is hosting the regional at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
