Moutlon-Levy Wins ITA East Region Championship

Norfolk, Va. - Senior Megan Moulton-Levy gave the William and Mary women’s tennis program an East Region Championship for the sixth straight season as she claimed the region singles crown on Tuesday morning at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. Competing in her first tournament of the year, Moulton-Levy tallied a pair of wins over top-50 players on Tuesday to claim the regional crown.

The singles crown marks the second time in her career that Moulton-Levy has won the ITA East Region title. She accomplished the feat in 2005 as well. Moulton-Levy also has won a regional crown every year of her W&M career. On top of the singles titles, Moulton-Levy won the doubles title in 2004 and 2006.

In the semifinals of the singles draw, Moulton-Levy breezed past Marshall’s Kellie Schmitt, 6-1, 6-0. Schmitt, who is ranked No. 48 nationally, had knocked off a pair of Tribe players on her way to the semifinals.

Sophomore Ragini Acharya narrowly made it an all William and Mary final as she jumped to a set advantage over No. 2-seeded and No. 26-ranked Tatisana Uvarova of VCU, claiming the opening set, 6-0. The Ram player rallied though to take the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-2, and advance to the finals.

In a match-up of familiar foes, Moulton-Levy claimed the regional title over Uvarova. After the Tribe senior jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening set, Uvarova retired due to illness. It marked the third straight season in which Moulton-Levy and Uvarova have met with Moulton-Levy now holding a 3-1 advantage in the series. By advancing to the regional championship both Moulton-Levy and Uvarova earned berths in the ITA National Indoor Championships.

In the doubles championship, the Tribe pair of Moulton-Levy and junior Katarina Zoricic fell in to the Marshall tandem of Schmitt and Karolina Soor, 8-4. The Thundering Herd duo entered the match ranked No. 59 nationally. It was the first loss of the season for Moulton-Levy and Zoricic, who fell to 6-1 on the year.

The Tribe will return to action at the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 1-4, in Columbus, Ohio. The ITA National Indoor Championships is the most exclusive of the three collegiate national championship events, featuring a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. Last season, Moulton-Levy and Zoricic captured the National Indoor Doubles Championship at the event.
