Tribe Downs Richmond, 2-0

Richmond, Va. - The William and Mary women’s field hockey team scored a pair of first-half goals on its way to a 2-0 victory at Richmond on a rainy Thursday afternoon. Freshman Jenna Cinalli tallied her third game-winner of the season off an assist from senior Kim Hedley to provide the College with all the scoring it would need. The Tribe evened its record at 9-9 on the season, while UR fell to 5-12.

The Spiders put pressure on the W&M goal early, taking five shots in the opening nine minutes of the contest. Senior goalkeeper Gwen Hunter was forced to make a pair of saves over the stretch, including a stop on a Sarah Blythe-Wood shot off a penalty corner. Despite the pressure, it was the Tribe who struck first in the match.

Cinalli continued her stellar rookie season for the Tribe with her fifth goal of the campaign. Hedley found the Fredericksburg, Va., native for the tally in the 12th minute of play to give the Tribe the 1-0 cushion. It was Hedley’s seventh assist of the season.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Tribe pushed its advantage to 2-0 thanks to a goal off a penalty corner. Off the corner, junior Katie Broaddus found redshirt freshman Alexis Gerber in front, and the Berwyn, Pa., native scored her third tally of the season. It was the first assist of the year for Broaddus.

Richmond held a 10-6 advantage in shots, but only put two attempts on goal. UR also held a 5-2 cushion in penalty corners. Hunter finished with two saves to record her third shutout of the season. She now has 13 clean sheets for her career.

The College will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28, when it hosts Senior Day. The Tribe will welcome No. 10 Old Dominion to Williamsburg at 1 p.m. The match will be the final regular-season home contest in the careers of Tribe seniors Kim Hedley, Gwen Hunter, Jes Kacerek and Laura Kastelic. W&M will honor and recognize the quartet prior to the match with Old Dominion.
