William and Mary Dominates at CAA Championships

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Another Colonial Athletic Association Championship, another win for the William and Mary men’s cross country team. The Tribe turned in the most dominating performance in conference history Friday at Bethpage State Park, winning the CAA title with a record-low score of 16 points, one shy of the lowest possible mark. It is the College’s eighth-straight CAA Championship, and 15th overall.

Complete Results

An astounding 10 of 12 Tribe runners earned All-CAA honors by finishing in the top-12, and all the College’s contingent finished in the top-16. Two-time All-American Christo Landry (Falls Church, Va.) won the individual title on the eight-kilometer course in 23:58.9, marking the eighth time in the past ten years that a harrier in the Green and Gold has won the conference crown. Only Tribe alumni Matt Lane ’01 has posted a faster 8K time at the CAA meet, running 23:46.01 in 1999. Classmate Dave Mock (Johnstown, Pa.) was second, finishing in 24:31.4. Redshirt-freshman Patterson Wilhelm (Lynchburg, Va.) and senior Rob Dennis (Little Silver, N.J.) came across in third and fourth, respectively, before the first non-W&M runner finished.

Charlie Swartz (Manassas, Va.) ran sixth in 24:53.6, only four seconds out of fifth. Drew Midland (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished seventh in 24:56.9, and freshman Tom Burke (Edina, Minn.) finished the Tribe’s top seven in eighth-place. James Picard (Midlothian, Va.) ran 25:12.4 for 10th place, leading freshman Pete Asaro (Gloucester, Mass.) (11th, 25:14.9) and junior Karl Lang (Oak Hill, Va.) (12th, 25:16.6) to finish out the all-conference team. Sophomore Harry Miller (Portland, Ore.) was 13th in 25:20.7, and junior David Groff (Centreville, Va.) ran 25:28.7 to finish 16th.

William and Mary will return to the trails next Saturday, November 3, with the Cavalier Open in Charlottesville, Virginia.
