Tribe Defeats GSU, 3-0, on Senior Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Claire Zimmeck tallied a pair of goals to lead the William and Mary women’s soccer team to a 3-0 triumph against Georgia State on Senior Night in Williamsburg on Friday evening. With the impressive performance, Zimmeck has now totaled three consecutive multi-goal efforts and has seven goals in the last three contests. The Tribe has won its last four contests and improves its record to 12-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in conference action.

W&M scored the initial goal of the evening in the 13th minute when senior Emily Kittleson raced down the left side and sent a cross to Zimmeck, who flicked the ball past GSU’s keeper.

Zimmeck tallied her second goal 1:22 into the second half. Junior Abby Lauer served the ball into the box from the left side, and Zimmeck fielded the pass, cut past a defender and found the back of the net. It was her league-leading 16th goal of the season and the 41st of her career, as she moved into fifth place on the College’s all-time goals list.

Sophomore Kellie Jenkins tallied the Tribe’s third goal in the 52nd minute when she took a pass from Kittleson and lifted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 15 yards out. The score was Jenkins’ second goal of the season, while it was Kittleson’s fifth assist.

W&M dominated the action and out-shot the Panthers, 21-1, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Tribe also had nine corner kicks, while Georgia State had none. Zimmeck, Lauer, senior Mary MacKenzie Grier and freshman Danielle Axenfeld all finished with three shots apiece.

In addition to the Green and Gold’s three goals, they nearly put a few more scores on the board. Grier had an attempt in the 24th minute hit off the post, while sophomore Krissy Vornadore registered a shot off the post in the 32nd minute.

Junior Meghan Walker and freshman Grace Barnard combined for the shutout, as W&M blanked the opposition for the 11th time this season.

The Tribe will be in action again when it plays at UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 2 p.m.
