Tribe Falls to No. 10 Old Dominion on Senior Day

Williamsburg - On a day that the William and Mary field hockey program honored its quartet of senior leaders, the Tribe dropped its final regular season affair to No. 10 Old Dominion, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the match, the College honored seniors Kim Hedley, Gwen Hunter, Jes Kacerek and Laura Kastelic for their contributions to the W&M program. The College finished the season at 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the CAA, while ODU improved to 11-8 on the year and 8-0 in league play.

Hunter made a pair of early saves to keep Old Dominion off the board in the seventh minute of play. Titia Beek wrapped a shot around from the right side of the circle, but the Tribe backstop was up to the task with the block. ODU did garner a penalty corner out of the chance. Off the corner, Hunter again made the stop as Katelyn Smither attempted a hard shot from the top of the circle.

The Monarchs finally broke through two minutes later as Shannon Mobley followed up a rebound for her first goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, Beek flipped a pass to Kathleen Shea on the left side of the circle. Her shot was blocked by Hunter, but fell back to Mobley, who beat the Tribe goalkeeper to the far post.

The College went on the offensive and had some chances to find the equalizer midway through the opening half. In the 12th minute of play, the Tribe narrowly missed finding its opening goal of the game. Following a common foul at the top of the circle, the ball was deflected to the right and then sent across the crease to the left side where freshman Jenna Cinalli corralled it. Her shot from went wide of the cage but deflected to the middle, providing a few anxious moments for the Monarchs as it sat bounded in front of the ODU cage. Hedley grabbed the ball, but the Monarch defense was able to recover and clear it.

Five minutes later, the Tribe had a dangerous counter attack chance. Junior back Katie Broaddus snuffed out an ODU penalty corner and the Tribe was off the races with a 4-on-2 advantage. The ball eventually made its way to Cinalli in the midfield, and she drew a defender at the top of the circle, before sliding a pass left to Kacerek. The Tribe senior tried to carry the ball to the left, but ODU goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll came out and made a nice play to knock the ball away.

In the 21st minute of play, the College generated its first attempt on goal. Hedley penetrated the circle, before backhanding a shot toward the far post from the left side. Driscoll made the stop to thwart the W&M chance.

The Monarchs opened their lead up with two goals over a two minute span in the closing minutes of the first half. In the 28th minute of play, Smither carried the ball to the left end line, before centering a pass to Alyschia Conn in the middle of the crease. She finished to the center of the boards to put ODU up, 2-0. In the 30th minute of play, Beek played the ball to Katie Ueberroth in front of the Tribe cage. After drawing the W&M keeper off her line, Ueberroth finished into the right side of the boards.

With just over two minutes remaining in the opening half, Hedley had another chance for the College. The Virginia Beach, Va., native carried the ball from the midfield into left side of the area. She sent a rolling shot toward the near post, but the ODU goalkeeper made a diving save to push the chance wide.

Old Dominion extended its lead to 4-0 with another goal off a penalty corner in the 47th minute of play. Smither scored the tally for the Monarchs with a hard shot from the top of the circle into the right side of the boards. Beek and Ueberroth garnered the assists on the play for ODU.

The Monarchs held a 14-7 advantage in shots and a slim 5-4 cushion in penalty corners. All four Tribe penalty corners came in the second half of play. Hunter finished with seven saves in her final collegiate game.
