W&M Extends Winning Streak to Five with a 1-0 Victory at UNCW

Wilmington, N.C. - Freshman Kaitlin O’Connor scored her first career goal to lift the William and Mary women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory at UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon. With the triumph, the Tribe extends its winning streak to five and improves its record to 13-4-1 overall and 8-1-1 in conference action. W&M remains atop the league standings.

O’Connor tallied the game-winner 12:33 into the contest when she fired a free kick from about 25 yards out. The freshman utilized the windy conditions to bend the ball past the UNCW goalkeeper’s outstretched hands and into the back of the net.

“We played very well today, and the players were very disciplined,” Head Coach John Daly said. “We had some opportunities to score a few more goals, but it was a good team effort.”

The College out-shot the Seahawks, 10-6, and held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, the Green and Gold totaled seven corner kicks while UNCW had just four.

Junior Meghan Walker earned her ninth shutout of the season and registered three saves. With the performance, she lowered her goals against average to 0.44.

During W&M’s five-match winning streak, it has posted four shutouts and has outscored the opposition, 11-1.

The Tribe will close out the regular season when it plays at Old Dominion on Thursday at 7 p.m.
