Men's Tennis Opens Tribe Invitational

W&M is hosting the second annual event at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center

Williamsburg - The William and Mary men’s tennis team opened competition at the Crowne Plaza Tribe Invitational on Nov. 2 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Senior Alex Cojanu, junior Marwan Ramadan and sophomores Keziel Juneau and Richard Wardell tallied wins on the opening day of the Invite.

In the top singles flight, Cojanu split a pair of matches. The Hallandale, Fla., native rallied for a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 11-9 victory over Amit Inbar of Maryland. Cojanu, who is ranked No. 85 nationally, fought off a match point, before winning the final three points of the super tiebreaker to claim the win. He capped the victory with an ace. Despite not holding a national ranking due to his freshman status, Inbar ended last year ranked No. 565 in the world singles rankings. In the night cap, Cojanu dropped a tight 6-5, 7-5 match to Notre Dame’s Brett Helgeson, who is ranked No. 66 nationally.

In the second singles flight, Juneau and Ramadan each tallied victories. Juneau notched his third victory of the season with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-3, victory over David Kwon of Maryland. Ramadan rebounded from a set deficit to record his fifth win of the season. The Tribe junior dropped the first set to Nickolai Nielsen, 6-3, but rallied to take the final two sets, 6-1, 10-6. In the third singles flight, Wardell also recorded a victory over a Terrapin counterpart, knocking off Roshan Potarazu in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7.

The Crowne Plaza Tribe Invitational will continue on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The event will begin with singles at 9 a.m. followed by doubles at 3 p.m.
