Tribe Defeats Towson, 3-0, on Senior Night to Clinch a CAA Tournament Berth

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Playing in front of a large and spirited crowd, William and Mary volleyball Head Coach Debbie Hill led the Tribe to a 3-0 (30-25, 30-17, 30-20) victory against Towson in the final home match of her 30-year career on Friday evening at Kaplan Arena. With the win, W&M clinched a spot in next weekend’s Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The College’s opening-round opponent and the tournament bracket are yet to be determined. The contest also marked the final home match for senior Megan McInnes, who had missed the entire season with an injury but served the match’s initial point on Senior Night.

Sophomore Bryana Carey led W&M (14-14, 8-6) with 10 kills on a .556 attack percentage (10-0-18), while freshman Erin Skipper totaled a match-high 13 put-aways. Freshman Ginny Bray also came up big with eight kills on .583 hitting (8-1-12), and junior Kim Mount provided a match-high 36 assists. Defensively, junior Jill Nowadly led all players with 14 digs.

As a team, the Tribe out-hit the Tigers .303 to .078.

While the Green and Gold held a narrow lead for much of the early portion of the initial game, the squad utilized an 8-3 run to build a comfortable 26-18 advantage following a block assist by Carey and Bray. Although Towson narrowed the margin to four with a 5-2 spurt late in the frame, the Tribe claimed the win. Mount had 13 assists in the opening game, while Nowadly added seven digs.

The College got off to a good start in the second frame and took a 12-6 advantage after a put-away by Skipper. W&M gradually increased its lead to nine, 19-10, following a bad set by the Tigers. Following a Towson timeout, the Tribe continued to push ahead and extended the margin to as many as 16 en route to earning the game. W&M hit .382 (16-3-34) as a team in the game.

With the score knotted at 10-10 in the final set, the Tribe rattled off six straight points to build a 16-10 lead. Although the Tigers cut the margin to five, 23-18, the Green and Gold countered with a 6-1 run en route to winning the game and the match. Carey came up big in the frame, totaling five kills on .833 hitting (5-0-6). Additionally, the Tribe hit .382 (17-4-34) as a team.
