Tribe Opens Competition at Kitty Harrison Invitational

Sophomore Lauren Sabacinski was a perfect 2-0 in singles on the opening day of the fourth-annual event.

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Sophomores Magdalena Bresson and Lauren Sabacinski competed on the opening day of the fourth annual Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Sabacinski went a perfect 2-0 in singles on the first day of competition, while Bresson was 1-1.

The event is held in honor of Kitty Harrison, a former head coach of the North Carolina women's tennis team from 1977 to 1998. During her career, she led the Tar Heels to four ACC Championships. The event will feature a unique points system that will determine the Sunday singles matches.

Sabacinski opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Linzee Mabrey of North Carolina, before downing Yulia Kashelkina of Marshall, 6-0, 6-1. The wins upped the Plantation, Fla., native’s season mark to 11-3.

After dropping her opening match of the day to Stophie Gradinski of North Carolina, Bresson rebounded with a straight-set win, 6-3, 7-5, over Marshall’s Jessica Keener. The Tribe sophomore moved to 13-3 on the season with the opening day split.

The Kitty Harrison Invitational will continue on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. The event will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 11. It is the final fall competition of the year for the Tribe.
