Nick Duda Leads Tribe to Fourth after One Day at Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - William and Mary’s men’s swimming and diving team posted five times in the school’s all-time top-10 lists in Thursday’s evening session at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, scoring 183 points for fourth place in the seven-team field. Connecticut is in first place with 303 points, with West Chester (239) and Maryland (218) also muscling in ahead of the Tribe.

First Day Results

Opening the evening was the 200 free relay team of Andrew Quesenberry (Kingsville, Md.), Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.), Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.), and Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.), which took fourth in 1:23.70, the fifth-best performance in school history. The team of Michael Naccarelli (Wallingford, Pa.), Kevin Lynch (Roanoke, Va.), Joe DeBiase (Moon Township, Pa.), and Drew de Michaelis (Washington, D.C.) took sixth in 1:26.35.

In the 500 free, Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) finished 10th in 4:38.07, the best mark on the team this year. Senior captain Alex Jendzejec (Reston, Va.) finished 20th in 4:43.68, with DeBiase right behind in 4:44.47.

In the 200 IM, junior Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.) timed 1:54.99 for sixth place, leading Geoff Ramsdell (Richmond, Va.) (seventh in 1:55.03) and David Mangini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) (eighth, 1:56.23) to the wall. Marshall Raiskin (Orlando, Fla.) finished 16th in 2:02.05, and freshman Jim Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished 24th with a time of 2:02.84.

Duda was the Tribe’s top finisher in the 50 free, taking sixth in a career-best time of 21.20 seconds. He leapt past Ryan Visser for seventh on the College’s all-time top-10 list with the effort. Amer timed 21.30 for seventh place, and also moved onto the all-time top-10 list in a tie for 10th with Chris Hanley. Gallagher finished eighth in 21.35, and the freshmen Naccarelli and Quesenberry placed 10th and 12th in 21.53 and 21.60, respectively. Lynch finished 18th in 21.59 seconds, and DeBiase was 22nd in 21.96.

In the 400 medley relay, the team of Matthews, Brisson, Ramsdell, and Duda timed 3:25.18 for fourth place in the race, and fourth place on the Tribe’s all-time top-10 list as well. Matthews’ lead-off 100 backstroke time of 51.62 ranks third all-time at the College. The team of Mangini, Fenningham, Lynch, and Gallagher placed ninth in 3:30.57.

The Terrapin Cup Invitational continues tomorrow with eight events.
