Lindsay Guers Posts Top Qualifying Time in the 200 Free

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Sophomore Lindsay Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) swam 1:51.79 in the preliminaries of the 200 free this morning to earn the top seed in tonight’s championship final, one of eight championship berths earned by the College’s athletes. Additionally, four swimmers earned spots in the consolation finals, and six made it into the bonus consolation race. Today’s events were the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, and 3-Meter diving.

In addition to being the fastest time of the morning, Guers’ performance makes her the third-fastest swimmer in the 200 free in school history. The two women ahead of her on the College’s all-time list will also be in tonight’s championship final, as sophomore Katie Radloff (Arlington, Va.) is seeded fourth with a time of 1:52.50, and junior Marina Falcone (Potomac, Md.) is seeded seventh after swimming 1:52.89 in her qualifying heat. Senior Christina Monsees (Brewster, N.Y.) qualified for the consolation finals with a time of 1:53.95, and freshman Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.) will swim in the bonus consolation race after qualifying in 1:56.96.

In the 100 fly, school record-holder Whitney Pezza (Warrenton, Va.) and sophomore Erin Welshofer (Charlotte, N.C.) each made it into the championship finals, timing 57.92 and 58.65 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Laura Herrmann (Fairfax Station, Va.) qualified for the consolation finals with her preliminary time of 58.95 seconds.

Senior captain Meredith David (Somerdale, N.J.) timed 57.77 seconds in the 100 back to advance to the championship finals, where she will be joined by Radloff, who swam the course in 58.16 seconds. Herrmann earned her second consolation finals berth of the day, timing 59.86 seconds to advance as the 14th-seed.

Sophomore Suzanne Figuers (Cary, N.C.) was the Tribe’s top qualifier in the 100 breast, timing 1:08.17 to make the consolation finals. The bonus consolation race will feature three Green and Gold swimmers, with Pezza (1:09.17), junior Rebecca Brofft (Fairfax, Va.) (1:09.21), and sophomore Courtney Alles (Manassas Park, Va.) (1:09.45) all advancing into the heat from preliminaries.

Alles, the defending CAA Champion in the event, cruised into the championship finals of the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.31. Figuers and junior Caitlin Block (Darien, Conn.) placed 17th and 18th, respectively, to head into the bonus consolation race as the top two qualifiers in the heat.

The finals of today’s events, plus the 200 medley relay, 800 free relay, and 3-Meter diving, will be decided tonight.
