W&M Falls to Virginia, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament

Charlottesville, Va. - The William and Mary women’s soccer team fell to Virginia, 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville. Virginia’s Nikki Krzysik scored the game-winner with just 14 seconds remaining when she flicked in a header from five yards out on the left side.

W&M (15-5-2) played particularly well in the first half and nearly scored on a number of occasions. Junior Danielle Collins put a header on goal in the 15th minute, but Virginia’s keeper made a leaping save and deflected the ball high. On the ensuing corner kick, Collins attempted another header but her strike bounced off the crossbar. Freshman Danielle Axenfeld also put a pair of shots on goal in the initial frame, but both attempts were saved.

Senior Emily Kittleson nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute. Junior Claire Zimmeck had a breakaway down the right side and sent the ball to Kittleson inside the box, but her attempt from in front of the goal narrowly missed to the left.

While both teams recorded six shots apiece in the first half, Virginia out-shot W&M, 15-3, after the intermission.

Collins led the Tribe with three shots, while Kittleson and Axenfeld each finished with two. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Walker totaled seven saves.
