Women’s Track Opens Indoor Season at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, VA - Two pentathletes opened the 2007-08 track season for the William and Mary women’s team this afternoon, competing at the Liberty Kickoff.

Sophomore Alyssa Gaeto (Brentwood, Tenn.) earned runner-up honors in the five-event pentathlon with a score of 3,009 points, the 10th-best performance in school history. Lurking around eighth and ninth through the first three events, Gaeto posted the day’s top mark in the long jump of 17’ 11.75” to leap into fourth, and finished with an 800m time of 2:38.92, third-best in the 14-athlete field.

Freshman Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.) finished ninth with 2,696 points, despite finishing only four of the five events. In the day’s first event, the 60m hurdles, Guevel cleared the course in 9.11 seconds to beat Kelly Knight’s freshman record of 9.38 seconds, set in 2003. Her performance ranks second all-time at the College, and was also second in the event. Guevel also posted the second-best mark of the day in the shot put with a best-effort of 34’ 3.5”.

Although Gaeto’s and Guevel’s efforts for the weekend are done, the Liberty Kickoff continues tomorrow with events starting at 9 a.m.
