Tribe to Play at Howard on Sunday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women’s basketball team will play its final contest before the exam break when squares off against Howard on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Washington, D.C. W&M enters the game having won two of its last three.

The Tribe (4-4) earned a 70-56 triumph at Longwood in its last outing. W&M recorded 19 steals in the win and forced the Lancers into 28 turnovers. Individually, senior Kyra Kaylor led the Green and Gold with a team-high 20 points, while sophomore Tiffany Benson registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Courtney Portell also came up big with 14 points and nearly equaled a single-game school record with eight steals.

Kaylor continues to lead the Tribe in scoring with 16.1 ppg, while she and Benson are averaging a team-best 7.1 rpg. Benson is also averaging a league-best 1.9 bpg. The Virginia Beach native has played particularly well of late and is averaging a double-double with 13.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg during the last three contests.

As a team, the Tribe leads the conference in three-pointers made per game (7.25) and ranks second in long-range shooting percentage (36.2).

Howard is 0-9 this season and is losing by an average margin of 17.0 points. Shannon Carlisle leads the team with 16.8 ppg, while Tamaya Daniels is the squad’s top rebounder with 7.6 rpg.

The Tribe owns a 3-3 record against Howard in the all-time series and has won three of the last four meetings. Last season, W&M cruised to a 78-63 triumph against HU in Williamsburg as Kyra Kaylor and Devin James both earned double-doubles.
