Katie Guevel Sets School Record in the 60m Hurdles

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Freshman Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.) broke the school record in the 60m hurdles and sophomore Nicole Kazuba (Chantilly, Va.) qualified for the ECAC Championships in the pole vault to highlight a day full of action for the William and Mary women’s track and field team at the CNU Holiday Open on Saturday. Due to technical difficulties, results were not available until Sunday afternoon.

Complete Results

Guevel, who set the freshman record in the 60m hurdles last week, ran 9.28 seconds in the preliminaries, good enough to qualify her for the finals. There, she ran 9.02 seconds to win her het and place fifth overall. Her finals time broke not only her own freshman record in the event, but also the school record of 9.08 seconds set by Katie Mook in 1997.

In the pole vault, Kazuba set a personal-record in qualifying for the ECAC indoor championships. Her best height of the afternoon was 12’ 7.5”, more than six inches past the height that won her the CAA title last April. Kazuba moves closer to Charlotte LaRoche’s school record of 13’ 1.25”, and sets herself up well for the rest of the season, as the performance (if it had happened outdoors) would have qualified for both the ECAC outdoor championships and NCAA Regional.

In the 60m dash, freshman Olofunke Fagbami (Lagos, Nigeria) had a pair of Tribe all-time top-10 performances. In the preliminaries, she timed 8.13 seconds, sixth-best all-time at the College, and qualified for the finals. In the finals, Fagbami cleared the course in 8.07 seconds, tied for the fourth-best performance in school history. In the long jump, sophomore Alyssa Gaeto (Brentwood, Tenn.) jumped 18’ 1.5”, the ninth-best mark ever at W&M, to take sixth place. In the pole vault, sophomore Jennifer Garrott (Burke, Va.) topped 10’ 6” to take third. Her height is tied for the 10th-best in school history.

Seniors Erin Gnass (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Nicole Bost (Mechanicsville, Va.) also cleared 10’ 6” in the pole vault, finishing second and fourth, respectively, based on the number of attempts needed to clear the height. In the shot put, sophomore Carly Morse (Sumerduck, Va.) won with a put of 42’ 2.75” and classmate Ashley Williams (Williamsburg, Va.) was second with a put of 40’ 7.5”. In the high jump, freshman KB Brower (Downington, Pa.) and Guevel each jumped 5’ 0.25”, with Brower taking fifth and Guevel sixth based on attempts.

In the mile run, senior Allie Lewis (Roanoke, Va.) was just behind the ECAC-qualifying mark with her runner-up performance of 5:05.97. Sophomore Kristin Krejmas (Milford, Pa.) was fourth in the race, timing 5:49.14.

William and Mary will be off for exams and the winter holidays until Saturday, January 12, when the Tribe travels to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
