William and Mary Announces 2008 Football Schedule

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary Director of Athletics Terry Driscoll announced the Tribe’s 11-game 2008 football schedule on Thursday, which is highlighted by six home games at Zable Stadium and a season-opening visit to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent N.C. State.

W&M will face the usual demanding eight-game conference slate of Colonial Athletic Association opponents, and the rota-tion of Northern Division foes changes back to New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Northeastern in 2008.

The trip to Raleigh to face the Wolfpack begins the season on Sept. 6. N.C. State will be the second Atlantic Coast Confer-ence opponent the Tribe has faced in as many years, having also traveled to Virginia Tech this past fall.

Following the opener, W&M will not play on the road again until Oct. 11, hosting three consecutive games at Zable Stadium. The Tribe opens the home schedule against longtime rival VMI on Sept. 13, before hosting local foe Norfolk State on Sept. 20. W&M holds a 2-0 advantage in the series with the Spartans, though the teams haven’t met since 1985.

After an open date on Sept. 27, W&M will open conference play at home with a Family Weekend contest against Villanova, looking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

A visit to New Hampshire is slated for Oct. 11, the first meeting between the conference rivals since the Tribe defeated a then No. 1-ranked Wildcat team, 42-10, at Zable Stadium in 2005. W&M was also victorious in its last visit to Durham, 9-7, in 2004.

W&M then travels to Delaware on Oct. 18 to face the NCAA FCS finalist Blue Hens at Delaware Stadium. Delaware has also won three-straight in the series after the Tribe’s double-overtime win in the 2004 NCAA Semfinals.

Homecoming weekend is scheduled for Oct. 25 in Williamsburg against conference rival Rhode Island.

Four conference games dot the schedule in November, as W&M travels to Towson on Nov. 1, before returning home to host Northeastern on Nov. 8. The Tribe will then close the regular season against a pair of 2007 FCS playoff teams, traveling to James Madison on Nov. 15, before ending the season at home against Richmond on Nov. 22.

The last time W&M had six scheduled regular season home games was 1988.
