Overdevest, McBride Honored by NSCAA

Williamsburg - Senior Ryan Overdevest and junior Doug McBride garnered Scholar All-East Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Overdevest was a second-team choice, while McBride garnered third-team accolades. It marked the sixth and seventh time a W&M player has received scholar all-region honors from the NSCAA. McBride earns scholar all-region distinction for the second straight season, while it is the first time Overdevest has been honored for academics by the NSCAA.

To be nominated for the NSCAA Scholar All-Region team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his or her career and have start more than 50 percent of the team’s games dur-ing the season. The player should be a significant contributor to the team, be at least a junior in academic standing and have a nominating coach who is a current NSCAA member. The nominees are reviewed by a committee for both their academic and athletic accomplishments to determine the all-region and then scholar All-America teams.

Overdevest was an ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-America choice earlier this season and became the first Tribe men’s soccer player to earn the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award. He owns a perfect grade point average while majoring in finance and accounting at the College. This season, he started 17 of 21 matches in the midfield and scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Delaware. Overdevest also assisted on the game-winner against VCU.

After earning honorable mention honors last season, McBride was a third-team choice this season. Over his three-year W&M career, the Mechanicsville, Va., native has been a fixture in the Tribe lineup, staring 55 of 56 contests in the midfield. As a junior in 2007, the 5-8 dynamo started all 21 contests and ranked fourth on the team with four points on a goal and two assists. He scored his first collegiate goal at Stony Brook on Sept. 29, before assists on goals in back-to-back Tribe wins over Georgia State (1-0) on Oct. 26 and UNC Wilmington (2-0) on Oct. 28.
