East Lansing, Mich. - The No. 15-ranked William and Mary women’s tennis team opened the 2008 dual-match season with a 5-2 victory over Michigan State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Jan. 19. After dropping the doubles point to start the match, the College claimed the top five singles matches in garnering the victory.
Senior All-American Megan Moulton-Levy continued to move her way up the W&M career singles and doubles wins list with a pair of victories on Saturday. Despite dropping the doubles point, the Tribe’s top pair of Moulton-Levy and junior Katarina Zoricic, which is ranked No. 46 nationally, downed MSU’s Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler in a tiebreaker. The win was the 103rd doubles win of Moulton-Levy’s career moving her into a tie for third on the career doubles wins list.
In singles, Moulton-Levy made quick work of Bader, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles position. The victory upped the Monroe, Mich., native’s season mark to 9-2, while pushing her overall career win total to 102. The 102 career singles wins moved her into a tie for eighth on the Tribe career list.
Zoricic claimed her eighth singles win of the season in straight sets at the No. 2 slot. She downed Manon Noe, 7-5, 6-0. Fellow junior Klaudyna Kasztelaniec improved to 9-4 on the season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Lindsey Lonergan at the No. 4 slot.
Sophomores Ragini Acharya and Magdalena Bresson racked up their 14th and 15th wins respectively at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Bresson downed Whitney Wilson, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 5 slot, while Acharya needed three sets to dispose of Kebler, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
W&M will continue its Midwest road swing against Big Ten competition on Sunday, Jan. 21, when it travels to Evanston, Ill., to face No. 7-ranked Northwestern at noon. The Tribe will look to avenge a 4-3 loss to the Wildcats in Williamsburg last season. It will not be easy though as the NU lineup features five ranked singles players and a trio of nationally ranked doubles squads.
