Men’s Swimming and Diving Falls to UNC Wilmington, 183-115

WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary men’s swimming and diving won seven of 16 events Saturday afternoon, but was unable to pull past UNC Wilmington on a cold and snowy day, falling 183-115. The Tribe’s record drops to 4-4, 2-2 in the CAA, while the Seahawks improved to 3-6, 2-1 CAA.

Junior Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) posted three victories in the meet, starting with his lead-off turn on the 400 medley relay that won in 3:30.03. Also on that relay were classmates Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.), Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.), and grad student Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.). Matthews continued his winning ways with two individual titles, sweeping the 100 back in 52.64 seconds and pairing it with a win in the 200 back in 1:55.11. Duda earned his 25th career victory by timing 47.84 in the 100 free.

Amer also earned an individual victory against the Seahawks, touching out the opposition in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.05. Sophomore Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.) won the 200 free in 1:44.55, and freshman Geoff Ramsdell (Richmond, Va.) claimed victory in the 100 fly with a time of 53.09 seconds.

The Tribe now has two weeks to prepare before travelling to the Mid-Town Aquatics Center in Newport News, Virginia, to face Old Dominion on February 1. The first event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
