Tribe Falls at No. 7 Northwestern

Evanston, Ill. - The No. 15-ranked William and Mary women’s tennis team dropped the second of its two road matches to open the season, falling 7-0 to No. 7 Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 20. W&M opened the season with a victory over Michigan State on Saturday and is 1-1 on the year.

The best matches of the day came at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots where senior Megan Moulton-Levy and junior Kat Zoricic competed against two of the top-10 players in the ITA national singles rankings. At top singles slot, Moulton-Levy, who is ranked No. 12 nationally, won the opening set against No. 2-ranked Maria Mosolova, 6-2. The Wildcat freshman, who defeated Moulton-Levy in three sets at the ITA National Indoor Championship, took the second set, 6-3. With the outcome of the team match already decided, the competitors played a 10-point super tiebreaker with Mosolova claiming the 10-3 win.

Zoricic put up a similarly impressive fight at the No. 2 slot against No. 9-ranked Georgia Rose, who played exclusively at the No. 1 singles position for Northwestern last season. After dropping the first set to Rose, 6-3, Zoricic rallied to take the second, 6-3, and even things up. Rose, though, claimed the victory with a 10-6 third-set super tiebreaker win.

The Tribe will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, Jan. 26, when it hosts No. 21 Wake Forest at 2 p.m. The rematch of the NCAA Regional final between the Tribe and Demon Deacons will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Last season, W&M downed Wake Forest twice, including a 5-2 victory during the regular season and a 4-1 win in the NCAA Tournament.
