Tribe to Play at George Mason on Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary women’s basketball team will return to action when it plays at George Mason on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In its last outing, the Tribe (8-9, 2-3) had its two-game winning streak snapped with a 63-55 loss to No. 15/20 Old Dominion on Sunday in Williamsburg. Senior Kyra Kaylor led the College with a game-high 18 points, while sophomore Kelly Heath finished with a career-high 16 points. Kaylor’s impressive performance against ODU, coupled with a 23-point effort in the win at Georgia State earlier in the week, earned her Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week honors.

Kaylor leads the Green and Gold with 15.1 ppg and 8.5 rpg, figures that rank among the conference’s top 10. One of the nation’s top long-range shooters, junior Courtney Portell leads the league and ranks seventh in the country with 3.12 three-pointers per game. Despite having her streak of consecutive games with at least one block ended at 28 versus ODU, Benson remains the CAA’s leading shot-blocker with 2.06 bpg.

As a team, the Tribe ranks second in the CAA and 19th nationally with 11.88 spg. W&M also ranks second in the league and 22nd in the country with 7.1 three-pointers per game.

Mason enters Thursday’s game on a four-game losing streak and owns a 7-9 record overall and a 1-4 mark in conference play. Lateisha Wade leads the team with 14.0 ppg, while Moni Akintunde is the squad’s leading rebounder with 6.3 rpg.

Last season, the Tribe earned victories in all three meetings with the Patriots. Kaylor has played especially well against GMU during her career, averaging a double-double with 16.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg.
