W&M to Play at Drexel on Sunday

WILLIAMSBURG - The William and Mary women’s basketball team will play its second consecutive road game when it squares off against Drexel on Sunday at 1 p.m.

W&M is coming off a hard-fought 47-42 loss at George Mason on Thursday evening in Fairfax, Va. Senior Kyra Kaylor led the College with her fifth double-double of the season, totaling a game-high 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals. In doing so, she became just the second player in school history to tally more than 1,000 career rebounds. With 1,008 boards, she needs just 36 more to break the program’s record that was established by Tiffany Stone (1988-91).

Kaylor leads W&M with 15.1 ppg and 8.5 rpg, figures that both rank among the top five in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native has played especially well recently, averaging 18.7 ppg on 54.3 percent (19-of-35) shooting during the last three contests. Additionally, she has totaled four steals in each of the last two games.

Sophomore Tiffany Benson continues to lead the conference in blocks (1.94 bpg), while junior Courtney Portell is the league leader in three-pointers per game (3.00).

As a team, the Tribe ranks second in the CAA with 12.00 spg and 6.83 three-pointers per game, while it is third with 39.3 rpg.

Drexel enters Sunday’s contest with a 10-7 record overall and a 5-1 mark in conference play. In its last outing, DU had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 57-52 overtime loss at Towson. Gabriela Marginean leads the team in scoring (17.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg).

The College owns an 8-7 mark against Drexel in the all-time series. Last season, W&M earned triumphs in both meetings against the Dragons, winning 48-43 in Philadelphia and 75-50 in Williamsburg. In the contest at Kaplan Arena, senior Devin James nearly earned the program’s first triple-double, totaling 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in 40 minutes of action. Kaylor has played especially well versus DU during her career, averaging 17.4 ppg on 51.9 percent shooting with 7.7 rpg. Additionally, she is shooting 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from beyond the arc.
