Guevel Qualifies for ECAC Pentathlon at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Freshman pentathlete Katie Guevel (Burlington, Kan.) had a personal-best day in every event Friday at the CNU Captain’s Invitational, culminating in an ECAC-qualifying score and freshman record to win the pentathlon.

Complete Results

In the opening event, the 60m hurdles, Guevel bested her own school record by running the course in 9.00 seconds. On December 8, Guevel had run 9.02 on the very same track. She continued with wins in shot put, with a put of 34-6.25, and in the 800m with a time of 2:26.05 to post a final five-event score of 3,530 points. Her score broke Lora Meekins’ old freshman record of 3,414 points, set during the ECAC Championships in 2000, and also ranks fourth all-time at the College.

Also competing in the pentathlon were sophomore Alyssa Gaeto (Brentwood, Tenn.) and freshman KB Brower (Downington, Pa.). Brower posted the top mark among all pentathletes in the high jump, clearing 5-3.25, and recorded a score of 2,995 in her first-ever attempt at the pentathlon to finish fourth overall. Gaeto scored 3,024 points to set a new personal-best mark and finish third in the day’s field of athletes.

Senior pole-vaulters Erin Gnass (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Nicole Bost (Mechanicsville, Va.) each cleared the bar at 10-10, finishing third and fourth, respectively, in a large field of 12 competitors.

The women’s track and field team continues competition this weekend by traveling to Fairfax, Virginia, for the George Mason Patriot Games. The one-day event starts tomorrow at 10 a.m.
