Tribe Sweeps No. 48 Virginia, 7-0

Charlottesville, Va. - The No. 15-ranked William and Mary women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 road victory over No. 48 Virginia on Wednesday night. The Tribe swept the doubles before claiming all six singles positions in straight sets. The College improved to 3-1 overall on the year, while the Cavaliers fell to 1-2.

The Tribe’s top duo of senior Megan Moulton-Levy and junior Katarina Zoricic got things started in pairs’ competition with an easy 8-2 win over Maggie Yahner and Lindsey Pereira. Junior Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and sophomore Ragini Acharya clinched the initial point of the match for the College with an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 slot over Amanda Rales and Jennifer Stevens. At No. 3 doubles, the sophomore pair of Carmen Pop and Lauren Sabacinski made it a clean sweep for the College with an 8-3 triumph over Hampton Williams and Lara Alexander.

W&M continued to roll in singles as the College claimed the top three singles slots in relatively quick fashion to clinch the team victory. Acharya, who is ranked No. 55 nationally, upped the Tribe’s lead to two, downing Yahner, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. No. 83-ranked Zoricic followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stevens as the No. 2 slot, before Moulton-Levy, who is ranked No. 12 nationally, clinched the team match with an identical 6-1, 6-2 score against Rales at No. 1.

Kasztelaniec, Sabacinski and Pop rounded out the Tribe sweep with wins at the bottom three singles positions. Kasztelaniec disposed of Pereira, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. Sabacinski defeated Alexander, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5, while Pop topped Williams, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. The wins were the first of the dual-match campaign for both Sabacinski and Pop.

The Tribe returns to action when it hosts No. 71 Princeton on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. The match will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg.
