Tribe Notches Road Victory at No. 75 Brown

Providence, R.I. - The No. 38-ranked William and Mary men’s tennis team tallied a 4-3 road victory over No. 75 Brown on Wednesday evening. The Tribe claimed the doubles point, before winning three of the top four singles positions to record the team victory. W&M upped its record to 5-2 on the year, while Brown fell to 4-2.

“Brown is a good team and a very difficult place to play with fast courts,” head coach Peter Daub said. “I give our guys credit for being able to adjust and overcome adversity to play a sound match.”

The Green and Gold got things started on the right foot, winning the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles slots to take the initial point of the contest. Junior Dominic Pagon and freshman Sebastien Vidal picked up their third straight victory as a team, downing Noah Gardner and Sam Garland, 8-5, at the No. 3 slot. The No. 33-ranked Tribe pair of senior Alex Cojanu and sophomore Keziel Juneau iced the tandem’s point with an 8-5 win over Basu Ratnam and Chris Lee at the No. 1 position. It was the seventh win of the year for the Tribe’s top doubles pair.

Sophomore Richard Wardell gave the College a 2-0 cushion with a straight-set win at the No. 4 position. The Fort Myers, Fla., native disposed of Gardner, 6-3, 6-2, for his seventh win of the season. Wardell improved to 4-3 in dual matches.

After Brown closed the gap to 2-1, Cojanu pushed the W&M advantage back to two with a win at the No. 1 singles slot. He tallied his eighth singles win of the season, improving to 4-3 at the top position, with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Saurahb Kohli.

Juneau clinched the victory for the Tribe with a come-from-behind, three-set win at the No. 3 position. It marked the third time in the last four matches that the Repentigny, Québec native rallied from a set deficit to claim victory. This time, Juneau dropped the first set to Jonathan Pearlman, 6-4, before forcing a decisive third set with a 7-5 win in the second. The Tribe sophomore notched his eighth singles win of the year with a 6-3 victory in the third set.

The Tribe will continue its road trip in Boston, Mass., when it faces No. 75 Harvard and Purdue. W&M battles the Crimson on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m., before it squares off with the Boilermakers on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m.
