W&M Falls at No. 13/14 ODU, 83-68

NORFOLK, Va. - The William and Mary women’s basketball team fell at No. 13/14 Old Dominion, 83-68, on Sunday afternoon in Norfolk, Va.

Senior Devin James led W&M (11-12, 5-6) with a team-high 16 points. Senior Kyra Kaylor and sophomore Kelly Heath also finished in double figures scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Kaylor equaled the school record for games played (115), matching the standard established by Sarah Stroh (2003-07).

The College’s 68 points marked the most scored against ODU (20-3, 11-0) by a conference opponent this season.

While the Tribe got off to a good start and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, the Lady Monarchs countered with a 9-1 run to go ahead by four with 15:55 showing.

W&M briefly reclaimed the lead, 14-13, following a jumper by Heath at the 13:35 mark, but ODU scored seven of the next nine points to take a four-point advantage.

The College answered with six straight points to go up 22-20 after a jumper by James, but Old Dominion rattled off nine consecutive points to build a seven-point advantage with 9:13 remaining in half.

While a jumper by Heath cut ODU’s lead to 29-24, the Lady Monarchs began to pull away with another 9-0 run. ODU pushed the margin to as many as 19 points before taking a 45-28 lead into the locker room.

At the half, Kaylor, Heath and junior Courtney Portell all led the Tribe with six points apiece.

ODU gradually pulled away early in the second half and extended the lead to 55-33 following a basket by Shahida Williams with 15:12 remaining.

Although the Lady Monarchs took their biggest lead of the game, 66-39, midway though the second stanza, the College fought back with a 9-2 run during a span of 2:13.

Shortly thereafter, W&M continued battling back with a 10-1 run and narrowed the margin to 73-58 with 4:37 remaining. James came up big during the stretch with seven points.

While the Green and Gold went on to outscore ODU in the second half, 40-38, they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at James Madison on Thursday at 7 p.m.
