Tribe Women’s Soccer Signs Pair of Players

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary women’s soccer head coach John Daly has announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Tribe for the 2008 season will be Diana Weigel (Fairfax, Va./Woodson High School) and Stephanie Gerow (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac High School).

A standout at Woodson H.S., Weigel earned first-team all-district honors during each of the past two seasons. Additionally, she garnered second-team all-region accolades as a sophomore and honorable mention distinction as a junior. Weigel was also selected honorable mention All-Met in 2007.

A member of the McLean MPS Elite (formerly the Southwestern Youth Soccer Alliance Club – SYA Elite), Weigel helped the squad claim the Virginia U-18 State Cup Championship. The highly successful team also won the ’07 CASL Girls’ Shootout Showcase and the ’07 Cincinnati Adidas Blue Chip Showcase U-17 title, among numerous other tournaments.

“Diana is a very technical left-footed player who can play anywhere on the left side of the field as well as in center midfield,” Daly said. “She strikes the ball beautifully and will challenge for playing time as a freshman.”

Gerow enters her senior season at West Potomac H.S. having earned second-team AAA All-District honors during each of the past three years. As a sophomore, she was the recipient of the Golden Boot Award after establishing a school record with 22 goals and 11 assists. The previous season, she earned the Gatorade Rookie of the Year Award after ranking second on the team in scoring.

A member of the VISTA Hot Shots, Gerow has been the team’s leading scorer in goals and assists every year since joining the squad three years ago. Additionally, she helped the club reach the finals of the U-18 State Cup in the fall of ’07 and the U-16 State Cup in the fall of ’05. The team also won the Fall 2007 WAGS Champions Division.

“Stephanie is a talented forward who can play wide on either side of the field,” Daly said. “She has an outstanding goal scoring record for her club team, the Vista Hot Shots, where she was a teammate of current Tribe freshman Danielle Axenfeld. Stephanie will also challenge for playing time as a freshman.”
