Tribe to Play at James Madison on Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women’s basketball team will play its third consecutive road game when it squares off against James Madison on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In its last outing, the Tribe (11-12, 5-6) fell at No. 13/14 Old Dominion, 83-68, on Sunday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. Despite the loss, W&M’s 68 points marked the most scored against ODU by a conference opponent this season. Senior Devin James led the College with a team-high 16 points, while senior Kyra Kaylor and sophomore Kelly Heath also finished in double figures scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Kaylor continues to lead the Tribe in scoring (15.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg), ranking third in the conference in both categories. Additionally, the Pittsburgh, Pa., native is averaging 18.0 ppg during the last three contests. When Kaylor takes the floor against JMU, she will break the school record for games played, besting the previous mark of 115 established by Sarah Stroh (2003-07).

Junior Courtney Portell leads the Colonial Athletic Association and ranks 17th nationally with 2.71 three-pointers made per game, while sophomore Tiffany Benson leads the league with 1.65 bpg.

As a team, W&M ranks 23rd in the country with 11.5 spg and second in the conference with 6.3 made three-pointers per game.

James Madison enters Thursday’s contest on a six-game winning streak and owns a 16-6 record overall. JMU is currently second in the league standings with a 9-2 mark. Preseason CAA Player of the Year Tamera Young leads the team with 20.3 ppg and 9.6 rpg. The scoring average ranks first in the conference, while the rebounding average is second. As a team, the Dukes lead the league in scoring margin (+14.5) and rebounding (46.5 rpg).

In the teams’ initial meeting this season, James Madison earned a 69-53 triumph in Williamsburg on Feb. 3. Kaylor led the Tribe with a game-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds. Kaylor has played incredibly well against JMU throughout her career and is nearly averaging a double-double with 13.1 ppg and 9.6 rpg.
