Tribe Freshmen Bury Binghamton With Big First Half

WILLIAMSBURG - William and Mary freshmen Maggie Anderson (Richmond, Va.), Grace Golden (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Ashley Holofcener (Reisterstown, Md.) combined for 11 goals, including 10 in the opening half, to help lead the Tribe race past Binghamton, 21-9, Sunday afternoon in the season-opener for both teams.

Anderson and Golden each scored four times, and Holofcener recorded six points on three goals and three assists to highlight an impressive debut for the Tribe rookie trio.

While the Tribe’s (1-0) youthful contingent grabbed the spotlight early at chilly Albert-Daly Field, senior Jaime Sellers (Kennebunk, Maine) and juniors Dolly Williams (Richmond, Va.) and Clare Dennis (Catonsville, Md.) showed the squad has quite a bit of scoring punch with its returning experience as well, as the three each tallied hat tricks in the victory.

Lauren Scott kept the Bearcats (0-1) in the contest early with eight first-half saves before finishing with 10, and Lisa Illig scored three goals to lead Binghamton.

Holofcener impacted every area of the game in her debut, adding a team-high five ground balls and causing two turnovers in addition to her six points. Golden also caused a pair of turnovers, picked up three ground balls and added two assists for five total points, and Anderson added a pair of helpers for five points and corralled three draw controls.

Freshman netminder Emily Geary (Wayne, Pa.) was solid in her first game with five saves, but the rookie’s four stops in the opening half, along with her classmate’s offensive fireworks, enabled the Tribe to pull away.

Sellers’ free-position goal in the opening two minutes started the scoring, but Binghamton’s Siobhan Menz answered with her own free-position goal moments later. Anderson got on the board with her first goal at the 25:11 mark on an assist by Holofcener, then Anderson returned the favor by snaring the ensuing draw and assisting on Golden’s first career goal just 12 seconds later to give the Tribe a 3-1 lead.

Leanne Musso scored on another eight-meter shot for the Bearcats to cut the deficit to one, but from there the Tribe rookies took over and sparked a 7-0 scoring run that led to the easy victory. Anderson was the catalyst, scoring three-straight goals in a five-minute span. Her third on a Godlen assist pushed the Tribe lead to 6-2 with 10:45 remaining in the first. Holofcener then netted back-to-back unassisted goals to stretch the cushion to 8-2, before Dennis found the net for the first time on the first of three Katie Delaney (Fairfax, Va.) assists to make it 9-2. Golden capped the run with her second from Anderson and extended the advantage to 10-2 at the 7:35 mark of the first.

Illig scored her two in the final seven minutes of the first half, but William scored twice and Golden tacked on another with 32 seconds on the clock to send the Tribe to break up 14-4.

Dennis scored the Tribe’s first two goals of the second half, and Sellers completed the hat trick with consecutive goals to keep wide margin. Junior Kari Fasick (Marriottsville, Md.) scored a second-half goal in her debut, and Williams and Golden added second half goals to round out the Tribe’s scoring.

Sophomore Katie Rees (Catonsville, Md.) grabbed a game-high five draw controls, and Golden added three draws as the Tribe held a commanding 21-11 edge.

Dennis recorded a team-high three caused turnovers, and freshman Sarah Jonson (Dallas, Texas) forced one turnover and picked up a ground ball.

W&M returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Longwood for a 4 p.m. start.
