Tribe Harriers Honored by the USTFCCCA For Academic Achievement

METAIRIE, LA - William and Mary placed four scholar-athletes on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic teams for the 2007 cross country season, it was announced today. To be named to either the men’ or women’s team, athletes had to have either placed in the top 10 percent of their regional championship race or earned All-American honors, as well as carry an overall GPA of 3.25.

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Golf, Ill.) was selected to the women’s team after placing 20th at the Southeast Regional in November. A kinesiology major, Anderson has become one of the brightest stars on the women’s track team this indoor season, achieving NCAA provisional qualifications at 3,000m (9:27.88) and in the mile (4:43.33), in addition to helping qualify both the distance medley and 4x400m relays to the ECAC Championships. Her performance in the mile broke the old school record by nearly three seconds.

The men’s team had three athletes earn All-Academic honors, tying Stanford for the second-most in the nation behind N.C. State’s four qualifiers. Three-time All-American Christo Landry (Falls Church, Va.) earned his second All-Academic award after placing 13th at the NCAA Championships. An economics and finance double-major, Landry was also named the Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Colonial Athletic Association. Classmate Ian Fitzgerald (Glenshaw, Pa.) ran sixth at the Southeast Regional for his third All-Academic mention. A history major, Fitzgerald was named to both the cross country and track All-Academic teams last year, and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor championships at 5,000m after running 14:07.81 in December. Sophomore Ben Massam (Chatham, N.J.) earned his first All-Academic award after finishing 15th at the Southeast Regional. A history major, Massam has qualified for the IC4A indoor championships at both 3,000m and 5,000m this winter.
