Tribe Hosts Hofstra on Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - With just three games remaining in the regular season, the William and Mary women’s basketball team will host Hofstra on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In its last outing, the Tribe (12-15, 6-9) snapped UNC Wilmington’s five-game winning streak with a 67-57 victory. Sophomore Tiffany Benson nearly recorded a triple-double with a school-record seven blocks, a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Katherine DeHenzel also nearly earned a school record with eight steals, coming just one shy of the single-game record. It marked the third time a W&M player has registered eight steals in a game this season, as senior Devin James and junior Courtney Portell both accomplished the feat.

Senior Kyra Kaylor continues to lead the team in scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg), ranking among the con-ference’s top five in both categories. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is just two points away from totaling 1,800 during her career.

Benson ranks tied for first in the Colonial Athletic Association with 1.78 bpg, while Portell ranks third with 2.48 made three-pointers per game. Portell needs just two more three-pointers to break the single-season school record established by Yolanda Settles during the 1993-94 season.

As a team, the College ranks third in the league with 5.89 three-pointers made per game, while it is fourth in rebounds (38.7 rpg), steals (11.30 spg) and blocks (3.15 bpg).

After starting the season 2-1, Hofstra has won just twice in its last 23 games. Sam Brigham leads the team in scoring (10.2 ppg) and rebounding (4.7 rpg). As a team, the Pride is averaging just 55.4 ppg and is getting outscored by nearly 10 ppg.
