W&M Women Qualify Four in the Championship Finals at CAAs

FAIRFAX, VA - Freshman Emily Burns (Snellville, Ga.) touched the wall in the 50 free in a personal-record 23.41 seconds Thursday morning to highlight the preliminary session for William and Mary which saw the Tribe advance 10 swimmers to the evening session. Towson took over the team lead with 166 points after advancing 12 swimmers, seven in the championship and five in the consolation. William and Mary moved up from a tie for sixth to third with 119 points.

Preliminary Results

Burns’ performance, which made her the second-fastest swimmer in school history, advanced her to the championship finals as the fourth seed. Sophomore Katie Radloff (Arlington, Va.) is the second seed after finishing the prelims in 23.07 seconds. Senior captain Meredith David (Somerdale, N.J.) advanced to the consolation finals after timing 24.61 seconds.

In the 500 free, junior Marina Falcone (Potomac, Md.) is the fourth seed in tonight’s championship finals after timing 4:56.06 this morning. Sophomore Lindsay Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and senior Christina Monsees (Brewster, N.Y.) each qualified for the consolation finals, Guers in 5:03.77 and Monsees in a personal-record 5:04.09 as the sixth-best swimmer all-time at the College. Sophomore Tage Waite (Norfolk, Va.) just missed advancing, placing 17th with a personal-record time of 5:05.31, eighth-best in school history.

Defending champion Courtney Alles (Manassas Park, Va.) will have the chance to defend her title in the 200 IM after qualifying to the championship finals in 2:07.36. The Tribe had a trio of qualifiers to the consolation finals, with sophomore Suzanne Figuers (Cary, N.C.) earning the top seed with a personal-best time of 2:07.95 (eighth all-time at the College). Also qualifying were junior Whitney Pezza (Warrenton, Va.) in 2:09.46 and sophomore Laura Herrmann (Fairfax Station, Va.) in 2:09.70.

The finals of all three events, plus the finals of the 400 medley relay, will take place this evening starting at 6 p.m.
