Nick Duda, Shawn Matthews Advance to the Championship Finals

FAIRFAX, VA - William and Mary qualified nine men out of preliminaries Friday morning at the CAA Championships, sending two to the championship finals and seven to the consolation finals. UNC Wilmington continues to lead the team race, 369-317 over Old Dominion, while the Tribe stands seventh.

Friday's Preliminary Results

Grad student Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.) advanced to the championship finals of the 200 free as the sixth seed in 1:42.36, just behind his personal-best of 1:42.32. Sophomore Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.) is the second seed in the consolation heat, after swimming the course in 1:42.99 this morning.

Junior Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.), fresh off of his school-record last night, advanced to the championship final of the 100 back in 51.33, his second-best performance ever. Sophomore Marshall Raiskin (Orlando, Fla.) swam a personal-best 52.85 seconds to advance to the consolation finals. His time ranks him seventh on the College’s all-time performer’s list.

The Tribe had three men advance to the consolation finals in the 400 IM, led by junior Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.), who locked down the top seed after swimming 4:07.79. Classmate David Mangini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) timed 4:11.45 to earn the sixth seed, and senior captain Alex Jendzejec (Reston, Va.) is the eighth seed with a preliminary time of 4:16.10.

In the 100 fly, junior Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.) advanced to the consolation finals as the third seed after touching the wall in 51.63 seconds. Freshman Geoff Ramsdell (Richmond, Va.) will also swim in the consolation heat after timing 52.09 seconds to take the sixth seed.

The finals of all four events, plus the finals of the 100 breaststroke and the 200 free relay, will take place this evening starting at 6 p.m.
