Men’s 200 Free Relay Takes Silver, Sets School Record

FAIRFAX, VA - William and Mary’s men’s swimming and diving team used a pair of school-record swims to move up the leaderboard Friday night at the CAA Championships, slipping past Towson to claim sixth with 219 points. UNC Wilmington leads the team race 464-397 over Old Dominion.

Friday's Results

William and Mary’s only medal of the evening came in a big way, as the 200 free relay team of Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.), Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.), Michael Naccarelli (Wallingford, Pa.), and Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.) took second with a school-record time of 1:22.93. Duda led the relay off by flirting with his personal-best for 50 yards, finishing in 21.01, only one-hundredth shy of tying the 21.00 he swam on Thursday. At the end of the race, however, the Tribe was the beneficiary of a one one-hundredth of a second difference, as they beat the school record of 1:22.94 set February 24, 2000 by Rusty Hodgson, Daniel Mee, Chris Craig, and Mike Lovett.

In the consolation finals of the 400 IM, junior Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.) set his first school record, claiming victory in 4:03.21 to break Josh Osterberg’s record of 4:03.26 set February 18, 1998. Classmate David Mangini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) finished second in the heat in 4:06.67, and senior captain Alex Jendzejec (Reston, Va.) was eighth in the heat (16th overall) with his time of 4:15.89.

In the consolation finals of the 100 fly, Amer finished second (10th overall) after timing a personal-best 51.36 seconds, moving up to seventh on the College’s all-time top performer’s list. Freshman Geoff Ramsdell (Richmond, Va.) was 12th in 51.52 seconds, placing 10th on the all-time list. Duda placed sixth in the championship heat of the 200 free by timing 1:42.41, while Gallagher finished 10th after timing 1:42.12 in the consolation heat.

In the 100 back, junior Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) finished fourth with a time of 51.17, his second-best performance ever, and sophomore Marshall Raiskin (Orlando, Fla.) timed 53.61 seconds in the consolation heat to finish 14th overall.

The final day of the championships begins tomorrow at 10 a.m.
