Shawn Matthews Snares Bronze, Breaks Own School Record

FAIRFAX, VA - William and Mary junior Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) timed 1:49.10 in the championships of the 200 back Saturday night to break his own school record and take third at the CAA Swimming and Diving Championships. UNC Wilmington won its eighth-consecutive team title with 702 points, while a costly disqualification in the 400 free relay dropped William and Mary from sixth to seventh.

Final Saturday Results

Joining Matthews in the finals of the 200 back was classmate David Mangini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), who finished fifth with a personal-best time of 1:51.87, amking him the fourth-fastest backstroker in school history. Sophomore Marshall Raiskin (Orlando, Fla.) was 16th in 1:59.18.

Grad student Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.) was fifth in the 100 free with a time of 46.37, and sophomore Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.) was 11th with a then-best effort of 46.33. Freshman Geoff Ramsdell (Richmond, Va.) was 14th in 57.22. In the 200 fly, junior Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.) finished 10th with a personal-best time of 1:54.57, moving him up to fifth on the College’s all-time top-performer’s list.

Junior Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.) was fifth in the 200 breast, timing 2:05.87, and in the 1,650 free, junior Jeff Collier (Salem, Va.) finished 11th with a season-best time of 16:27.00. Leading off the 400 free relay, Gallagher dropped his personal-best in the 100 free yet again to 46.23 seconds, ranking him sixth in school history. Freshman Mike Newcomb (Williamsburg, Va.) set a new collegiate-best scoe in the 3-Meter dive, totaling 208.20 points for 16th.

The College’s season is now finished.
