03/01/08 9:34PM
FAIRFAX, VA - Sophomore Katie Radloff (Arlington, Va.) continued her streak as the golden girl of the CAA Championships Saturday night, sweeping the sprint freestyles for the second year in a row with her conference-record performance in the 100 free, and garnering Women’s Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second time. Towson University won the championship with 753.5 points, while William and Mary blew past UNC Wilmington in the final relay to take second with 470 points.
Final Saturday Results
Down seven points to the Seahawks heading into the relay, the team of Marina Falcone (Potomac, Md.), Lindsay Guers (Orwigsburg, Pa.), Emily Burns (Snellville, Ga.), and Radloff out-duelled Towson throughout the race, with the decision not coming until the final 10 yards when Radloff pulled away to touch in 3:25.25, the second-best mark in school history.
Radloff dusted the competition in the 100 free by more than one second with her time of 49.25. That effort is an automatic-qualifying mark to the NCAA Championships, and broke her own school, pool, conference, and championship meet records. In the consolation finals, Burns won the heat with a personal-record time of 51.63 to rank third on the College’s all-time performer’s list. Guers was second in the heat in 51.92, and Falcone was third with a personal-best 52.05 seconds, moving her to sixth on the top performer’s list. Senior Christina Monsees (Brewster, N.Y.) finished her stellar career by timing 53.39 seconds for eighth in the heat.
Sophomore Tage Waite (Norfolk, Va.) started the evening early for the Tribe by breaking the school record in the 1,650 free with her time of 17:06.98 to place seventh. Her 1,000-yard split of 10:21.28 ranks her third in school history. Freshman Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.) finished ninth overall in 17:15.92, the fourth-best time in school history, and her 1,000-yard split of 10:20.36 ranks her second all-time at the school. Classmate Clare LeGuyader (East Islip, N.Y.) was 15th in 17:38.29, ninth-best in school history, and her 1,000-yard split of 10:35.88 ranks her seventh in school history. Junior Caitlin Block (Darien, Conn.) gave the Tribe four scorers in the event, finishing 16th in 17:39.86, 11th-best in school history.
In the 200 back, senior captain Meredith David (Somerdale, N.J.) was eighth in 2:06.36, and sophomore Suzanne Figuers (Cary, N.C.) was 15th in 2:07.90. In the 200 fly, sophomore Erin Welshofer (Charlotte, N.C.) was sixth in 2:04.28, and junior Whitney Pezza (Warrenton, Va.) was seventh in 2:05.05.
