Richmond Rolls To 19-10 Win Over Tribe

Richmond, Va. - Mandy Friend scored five goals, and Allison Furstenburg dished out four assists to help Richmond roll past William and Mary, 19-10, Sunday afternoon in collegiate women’s lacrosse action at First Market Stadium.

Friend also tallied a pair of helpers to record seven points, and Furstengburg netted a hat trick for seven points of her own in helping Richmond (2-3) snap a three-game losing streak. Jules Nicola added four goals for the Spiders, who have now won three-straight in the series.

W&M (2-3) was led by senior Jaime Sellers’ (Kennebunk, Maine) six points on five goals and an assist, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Tribe from dropping its third consecutive game. Freshman Maggie Anderson (Richmond, Va.) added four goals in defeat.

The Spiders were in control early, using a near flawless offensive performance in the first half, which was aided by 11 first-half Tribe turnovers. Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Claire Cuniff and Friend in the opening three minutes, before Anderson answered with her first on an eight-meter shot. But, the Spiders committed only one turnover in the opening 20 minutes and pulled away with a 6-0 scoring run.

Furstenburg scored a pair in the run, and Friend added two more as well during the spurt which gave a Richmond a commanding 8-1 lead with 11:45 remaining in the opening period.

Sellers got on the board with 5:16 remaining in the period to extend her scoring streak to 21 games, but Lexie Marrocco scored for Richmond in the final four minutes to give the Spiders a 9-2 cushion at the break.

Richmond extended its lead to 11-2 in the opening minute of the second half on goals by Anne Ryan and Jenna Hubbard. The Spiders later went ahead 14-4 with 19:24 remaining on a Nicola goal, but the Tribe battled back with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to seven. Sellers scored unassisted, then assisted on Anderson’s fourth goal of the game to make it 14-6. Sellers tacked on another to trim the margin to 14-7 with 17:04 remaining, but the Spiders answered and put it away with goals from Nicola and Furstenburg.

Junior Julia Martin (Woodside, Calif.) was the only Tribe player to score, finding the net in the final minute.

Sellers led the Tribe with four draw controls, and sophomore Katie Rees (Catonsville, Md.) and freshman Grace Golden (Manhasset, N.Y.) each grabbed two draw controls. Freshman Sarah Jonson (Dallas, Texas) caused a turnover and picked a pair of ground balls, and junior Clare Dennis (Catonsville, Md.) also caused a turnover and recorded a pair of ground balls.

W&M returns to action next Sunday, traveling to Penn State.
