Tribe Falls to No. 8 Tulsa at Blue Gray Classic

Montgomery, Ala. - The No. 60 William and Mary men’s tennis team dropped its opening round match of the Blue Gray Tennis Classic falling to No. 8 Tulsa, 4-0. W&M fell to 11-8 on the year, while Tulsa, who was the highest ranked team at the event, improved to 11-2 on the season.

In doubles, the Golden Hurricane took the initial point of the match, claiming the No. 1 and No. 3 positions by identical 8-3 scores. Tulsa took the match with straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions, despite the Tribe battling tough at the other three slots.

At the top singles spot, senior Alex Cojanu, who is ranked No. 124 nationally, led No. 41-ranked Arnau Brugues before their match was called due to the outcome of the match already being decided. Cojanu took the opening set from Brugues, 7-5. At the No. 6 position, sophomore Richard Wardell claimed the opening set over Ross Cunningham, 6-2, before Cunningham took the second set, 6-0, prior to the team match being decided. Despite dropping the first set, 6-2, junior Marwan Ramadan led Victor Kolik of Tulsa, 6-5, in the second set at the No. 3 slot, before the match was suspended.

W&M will battle No. 49 N.C. State on Friday, March 1, in the consolation bracket of the Blue Gray Classic. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
