Tribe Disposes of No. 62 Marshall

Williamsburg - The No. 25 William and Mary women’s tennis team downed No. 62 Marshall, 7-0, in its first home outdoor match of the season at Busch Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon. The College had to rally to take the doubles point, before sweeping the singles slate to clinch the victory. Senior Megan Moulton-Levy moved into sole possession of second place on the W&M career combined wins list with her singles and doubles wins against the Thundering Herd. W&M improved to 10-8 on the year with the victory, while Marshall fell to 12-5.

The Tribe took the opening point of the match with wins at the top two doubles slots. After Marshall won at No. 3 doubles, the No. 11-ranked team in the country of senior Megan Moulton-Levy and junior Katarina Zoricic quickly evened the match with a dominating 8-2 win over Isabell Raich and Thaddea Lock. Junior Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and sophomore Ragini Acharya clinched the doubles point for the Green and Gold with a come-from-behind win at the No. 2 slot over Jessica Keener and Yulia Kashelkina. After trailing by a break at 4-2, the Tribe tandem reeled off six of the final seven games at the position to secure their third win as a pair this season.

In singles, Acharya made quick work of Lock at the No. 3 slot, 6-1, 6-0. The win upped her team-leading total to 24. Moulton-Levy followed suit with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 spot over Jeanne Schwartz. The victory bumped her season ledger to 22-6 and marked the 231st combined (singles and doubles) win of her career. It pushed her past Michelle O and into second on the chart behind only the 242 combined victories of Lauren Nikolas.

Freshman Carmen Pop clinched the Tribe victory with a straight sets triumph at the No. 6 singles positions. Pop won her fourth straight match, downing Kashelkina, 6-4, 6-3, to improve to 8-5 on the season. Zoricic, Kasztelaniec and sophomore Lauren Sabacinski rounded out the Tribe win with victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. At No. 2, Zoricic needed three sets to dispatch Karolina Soor, 6-7, 6-2, 10-4, for her 17th singles win of the year. Kasztelaniec breezed past Raich, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 position for her 20th single victory, while Sabacinski improved to 22-10 on the season with a win over Keener at the No. 5 slot.

W&M will return to action when it wraps up the weekend with a match against defending Ivy League Champion Penn on Sunday, March 23. The start time for the match is slated for noon at the Busch Tennis Courts.
