UNCW Defeats Tribe, 16-5

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The William and Mary baseball team fell at UNC Wilmington, 16-5, on Saturday afternoon.
Leading the Tribe (16-7, 7-4) was senior Paul Juliano, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI. Junior Ben Guez finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with a RBI, while classmate Mike Sheridan also went 2-for-4. Senior Aaron Hurwitz drove in a pair of runs.
Bradley Holt (4-1) worked 5.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs to record the victory, while sophomore Tyler Truxell (2-1) took the loss.
UNCW (16-4, 8-0) had a big first inning and put 10 runs across in the initial frame. Mark Locklear led off with a double to left center, and Daniel Hargrave brought him in with a triple. Jason Appel followed with a RBI double down the right field line. After Mark Carver drew a walk to put two runners aboard, Nate Hall drove in another run with a single to right. With Jeremy Neustifter on in relief, Shane French registered a three-run shot over the left field fence. Still with no outs, Justin Barefoot singled, Cody Stanley drew a walk and Mike Rooney reached on an error to load the bases. After Locklear flew out to center, Hargrave plated a pair of runs with a single to center. Appel then walked, and Hall drove in the final two runs with a RBI single to right.
The Seahawks added two more runs in the second. With one out, Stanley registered an infield single and later scored on a wild pitch. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Rooney scored when Hargrave got aboard on an error.
UNCW extended its advantage to 14-0 with a pair of runs in the third. Carver began the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Hall grounded out. Barefoot later drove in Carter with a two-out double down the left field line, while Stanley brought in the second run with a RBI single to left.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth. Juliano drew a walk to begin the inning, and sophomore Chris Jensen was then hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by junior Lanny Stanfield, Juliano scored on a groundout by Hurwitz. Guez plated the second run with a single to center.
W&M tallied another run in the sixth. With one out, senior Greg Maliniak reached on an error, and Juliano and junior Brett Conner drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Freshman Derrick Osteen then brought in Maliniak when he grounded into a fielder’s choice.
The Seahawks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Alex Hill and Hargrave drew back-to-back walks from sophomore Cody Winslow to begin the frame. After both runners moved into scoring position on a groundout by Appel, Hill scored when Carver reached on an error.
With freshman Carl Kleihnenn on in relief of Winslow, UNC Wilmington tacked on another run in the seventh to push the margin to 16-3. French led off with a walk, and Tyler Scott came on as a pinch runner. Scott then came around to score on three wild pitches.
The College answered with a run in the top of the eighth. Juliano began the inning with a single and moved to third on a one-out single by Osteen. Juliano then scored when Hurwitz grounded out to short.
With two outs in the ninth, junior James Williamson singled to left and Maliniak followed with a walk to put two runners aboard. Juliano then drove in the contest’s final run a single to left.
The teams will play the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m.
