Tribe Wins Third Straight, Downs Penn

Williamsburg - The No. 25 William and Mary women’s tennis team ran its winning streak to three straight with a 6-1 victory over defending Ivy League Champions Penn, 6-1. The College swept the doubles, before winning five of the six singles positions to up its mark to 11-8 on the year.

The Tribe quickly earned the doubles point with convincing 8-3 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The 11th-ranked duo in the country senior Megan Moulton-Levy and junior Kat Zoricic upended Kate Kosminskaya and Maria Anisimova for their 85th victory as a team over the last three seasons. The Tribe’s top doubles team in 22-7 on the year and 15-4 in dual matches. The win was also the 99th of Zoricic’s career, moving her into sole possession of sixth on the Tribe’s career doubles wins list.

Junior Klaudyna Kasztelaniec and sophomore Ragini Acharya clinched the pairs point for the second straight match win a win over Yulia Rivelis and Charlotte Tansill at the No. 2 slot. The W&M tandem evened its season mark at 4-4. The sophomore duo of Lauren Sabacinski and Carmen Pop rounded out the Tribe sweep in doubles with an 8-7 (1) win over Julia Koulbitskaya and Michelle Mitchell at the No. 3 slot. The win was the third of the year for Sabacinski and Pop.

Moulton-Levy won her 12th match of the season over a nationally ranked foe, downing No. 103 Kosminskaya. After the Tribe All-American took the opening set, 6-1, Kosminskaya retired due to injury. The win bumped Moulton-Levy’s season mark to 23-6.

Sabacinski gave the Tribe a 3-0 lead with a straight sets win at the No. 5 slot. The Plantation, Fla., native downed Mitchell, 6-1, 6-1, for her 23rd singles victory of the year. Acharya clinched the Green and Gold victory with a three-set win at the No. 3 slot over Anisimova. After splitting the first two sets, 6-1, 2-6, the Tribe sophomore took the final set, 6-1, to push her season ledger to 25-12.

Zoricic and Kasztelaniec rounded out the Tribe victory with wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 slot. Zoricic won her second straight match and her 18th overall, downing Rivelis, 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 2 position. At the No. 4 spot, Kasztelaniec downed Tansill, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, for her third straight win as she improved to 21-9 overall.

The Tribe wraps up its three-match homestand when it battles No. 36 VCU on Saturday, March 29. Start time is slated for 1 p.m. at the Busch Tennis Courts.
