William and Mary Posts Day’s Best Score, Improves to Sixth at Home Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG - William and Mary’s women’s golf team rallied on a brisk Easter morning to post the best team round of the day and make up 14 strokes on the tournament leaders in the final round of the First Market Bank Intercollegiate, improving to a tie for sixth at 64-over (327-313—640) with state rival Longwood. Marshall and James Madison each finished the two-day event at 56-over (632), and in the team playoff, Whitney Wolejko’s birdie on the second playoff hole gave the trophy to the Thundering Herd. Bradley’s Bari-Lynn Erais won the individual medal with a 36-hole score of 146 (+2).

Freshmen led the way for the Tribe on Sunday, as Katie Murphy (Chesapeake, Va.) had a massive 12-stroke improvement to shoot 74, the day’s best round, and improve to a tie for 17th. Classmate Sarah Whitney (Hingham, Mass.) played well all weekend, closing with 76 today to finish tied for eighth at 12-over (156). Her round of 76 tied for the second-lowest score of the day with Erais. Senior Erika Oldenkamp (Hinsdale, Ill.) also finished in the top 15, tying for 11th after closing with 77 in the final round.

Senior Misha Harvey (Forest, Va.) tied for 26th after improving two strokes to shoot 80 on Sunday, and freshman Avi Hockfield (Gladwyne, Pa.) carded 82 to finish tied for 30th. Sophomore Morgan Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) improved four strokes to shoot 80 and tie for 36th, which is where senior Kara Siford (Manassas, Va.) also finished out with a two-day total of 164 (+20). Sophomore Brielle Paolini (Virginia Beach, Va.) paired her first-round 84 with another and finished tied for 62nd one stroke ahead of senior Marissa Sprick (Windermere, Fla.), who improved five strokes to shoot 82 and finish tied for 69th. Freshman Megan Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) improved four strokes to shoot 85, and move up to a tie for 92nd.

Next up for the Tribe is the Tina Barrett Invitational, March 31 and April 1st in Farmville, Virginia.
